Ya know, I had my ass kicked this week...or at least my pride. We still don't know our injured kitty's ultimate fate. Right now she is with us and on morphine. Her survivial will depend on what the specialist says on Monday. If he can fix the break she makes it. If not, probably not.
However, if she has anything to say about it...! First of all remember she has a broken hind limb and a paralyzed fore-limb.
We just bought a recliner/rocker we had to assemble and still had the box, which is basically a big cube about a yard across in all directions...including height. We padded the bottom with lots of soft towels and included a shallow litter box. We were so worried about her mobility that we used numerous layers of folded towels to make the surface level with the top of the box so she doesn't have to climb up to get into it. Then we filled it way up so it isn't much of a climb to get out.
Really we worked really hard on that. Were there any dips or creases she could get hung up on? Was it soft enough? Was it smooth enough? Whether or not we should include a stuffed animal was another debate. We decided the lemur had too many limbs she might get tangled in so we went for the manatee. She cuddles with it.
Other than the injuries she is showing good signs. She is eating and using her litter box. She is even warming up to us a bit. Right now my husband is busy seducing her with lots of pets. She has gone from hissing at us to purring and asking for tummy rubs.
However no matter what good signs she's showing I never thought she'd get out of her box! She did though - the night before last! Don't ask me how a cat with only two working limbs climbed (??) or jumped (?!!?) out of a box 6 times taller than she is! Morphine must be some good stuff!
I actually dug under the towels thinking she went down under them before believing she went up! She got all the way across the room and under a dresser. We had to empty and move it to get her out.
So, we, both having college degrees, decided in our mighty intelligence to open one flap of the box and cover the other half with a baby gate so she'd get air. No way she was even gonna try it. Nope. None.
Right.
She moved it during the night. The box was open. She didn't get out, but I had the feeling I interrupted the escape from Alcatraz this morning.
We have been trying really hard NOT to name her, and if she makes it we will do the usual debate and compromise, but in my head, way back where I won't admit it, I am already calling her Trouble.
Clubs I'm in.

One of my friends has/used to have a cat that got accidentally stepped on as a kitten. He was never quite right after that: sort of hunchbacked, tilted sideways, walked with a pronounced shuffling limp à la Igor. To this day I do not know what his real name was. He was always referred to as "The Great Retardo".
It's always the stranger ones we get attached to.

The thing with cats is that they are 100% individuals and they all cultivate their particular brand of strange.

Life is too short and too precious to waste by hating another for petty reasons. Let us look past gender, race and religion and all come to the understanding that we are all the same under our skin.
