Kitten Warning: Rant again.

Wed Jul 16, 2008, 2:52 PM
Ok guys. Here comes another ranting vent.

So...went to Cleveland to visit family. Had a ball...but that's another journal. My sister tells me she has a wonderful idea. She's got that devil-smile on her face that tells me I'm in for it. She then says she has decided that I need a new cat.

Now...for the record. I have 2 large dogs, 4 cats, and a husband, all of which I rescued from the side of the road or the pound. Except the husband. I rescued him from Botcon.

She has acquired the cat from her neighbor. One of the people next door is in hospice - he will die very soon, so my sister told his wife "If you need anything, just ask..." Well the negihbor came over and said "This little cat showed up at our dorr and I rally need you to find her a home..."

What was my sister supposed to say to her dying neighbor? "No! Deal with the cat yourself!"?

Well, of course as soon as her kids saw the cat they named her Minerva McGonagall and now my sister has a new cat. She is still in denial of course and is doing the diligent "looking for a home" thing.

I found it all quite amusing. I made lots of unhelpful remarks and laughed.

Ah...Karma. Karma is real. Karma works. We aren't even home a week and my husband calls, frantic and fearful for work. He has found a cat in the drive-through of the bank he works at. She's got a broken leg and hypothermia from being out in the rain. She will probably need an amputation because she broke the growth plate. How does he know? He's already shelled out over 100$ at the vet's office next door.

The surgery will probably cost us close to a grand.

Now...I am not happy. I am NOT mad at my husband. If he had left an animal out to suffer like that I would have strung him up by unmentionable anatomy.

Who I AM mad at are the people who just dump their animals outdoors like this! This kitten has just been spayed! She doesn't belong outdoors playing in traffic! She is a HOUSE cat and doesn't belong outdoors at all! I have half a mind to show her to my idiot neighbors across the street who let their dogs run around all over the road.

I did 5 years internship at a vet clinic people and I've seen enough of this crap. Animals do not get "look both ways!" If you want to see someone with half their face torn off volunteer yourself! Stick YOUR head out in the road. Put your own limbs in the road and test out the tires.

My husband and I are not wealthy. We should not be cleaning up this mess, but I can almost promise you the person who owns this cat will never come forward because they don't want to be asked to pay the bills. We can't afford her. We don't have room for her! Our animals are crowding each other as it is- this is what happens when two pet lovers get married. The freaking Brady Bunch. Now I get to be the one to make ugly decisions about whether this poor thing lives or dies.

Cats...yes cats...are domestic animals and they belong INDOORS. They are exposed to viruses, dogs, racoons, and oh yeah...cars. IMHO if you take on a pet you treat it like your kid and look out for it. If you are too broke or too lazy to do that then DON'T have a pet! "But cats like to go outside..." Sure they do....and so do dogs. Leash them! Fence them...watch them! If you don't and something happen YOU DID IT...just like you hit with the car yourself. Yes they get bored. It is the owner's job to give them things to do.

My white dog was starved and probably beaten. My husband's dog was found wandering the streets in Miami. My oldest cat was found at 4 weeks old on the side of the road in November in Cleveland. Simba wasn't much older when M. found him wandering out in a thunderstorm. Gadget I found in February when he ran into my school to escape the snow and a pack of kids that were throwing rocks at him. He was bleeding and terrified, but he sure knew who to run to didn't he? Rayne ran out into the road in front of my car and promptly lay down right in the middle of the road. She was already spayed but no one showed up to for our signs. Why were all of them discarded like trash? They are all sweet and beautiful. And they remember. I've had Marcus 10 years. He still flinches if we let the leash or a belt swing when he is around.

Oh...not my story...but recently someone told me they got more calls for her "Found cat" signs involving how the idiot on the other end found her cat?! One of these nice people not only "found" a cat she never lost but demanded money to return it and then told her since she wouldn't pay them (for a cat she never lost) that they were just going to shoot it.

I would have reversed that phone call and called the cops.

I'm done. I think I'd like legislation recommending anyone who abuses animals be spayed and neutered. At least then they won't breed.

Stories like that always break my heart. I agree thet people who abuse animals should NOT have pets. And I'm sorry, but those kids need to be spanked for doing that!

Animal abuse is cowardly. Sure, attack an animal that can't fight back instead of somebody their own fucking size!

Grrrrrr! People who hurt children an animals are high on my shitlist of the types of people I hate.

There are so many people that shouldn't have pets...or children for that matter. I see people neglect their animals and the behaviorist in me wonders how they treat their children.

It breaks my heart to hear of stories like that. We live next to the crazy cat people. They have 30 felines in their house at last count. The city is trying everything to fix the situation, the problem is that the cats are not being cared for and we don't have an ASPCA chapter for several hundred miles. Our pound IS the local vet, and they can't hanle the load.

Fortunatly, I'm highly allergic to cats, so I don't bring any of those home, but I can't count how many stray dogs have come home and spent the night on our bed until the owners could be found.

Jesus jumping Christ on a pogo stick. I mean, I watch this kinda thing on TV, on Animal Planet, watching the SPCA struggle with all that. That's usually 15 or so people trying to help 5 million animals. It's damn depressing! They can't help even a thousand of those abused creatures. Very often people try and do their work and care for the pets, but soon enough find out that's not possible for a single person to do unless you have a hell lot of money. You can take one dog, two, maybe three, up to five or so cats, but a single family can't take much more.
Frustrating.

But not half as frustrating as the fact that there are people who actually hurt those animals. Intentionally or not, if your animal is hurt so badly it needs surgery and it's not due to some unfortunate accident that could not have been foreseen, you should not have the pet. I know the SPCA always makes sure the person adopting an animal has the ability and funds to care for it, but private breeders or people who forgot to sterilize their animals almost never do, so there's more and more homeless animals.
Frustrating.

And there is still the last thing - people who hurt animals intentionally. Why? How could anyone hurt an animal that did nothing wrong? I can understand the reasoning behind shooting a every aggressive dog. I can't forgive it, but I can understand what might have been the motivation. But the fact is, the animals that are abused are almost always very friendly and very loving pets. Could you hurt a child that would hug you and look at you with huge eyes and said it loves you? Don't think so. Could you hurt a dog that licked your hand and wagged it's tail at you, barking happily and wanted nothing more than to play and be loved? Many people do that. They starve them, they beat them, they kill them in slow and painful ways. Once I saw a report from the SPCA, I think in Houston. There was a horse locked up in a trailer, barely alive, starving. There was "Death!" written over the inside of the trailer. Someone wanted that horse to die. Why? It got better and was a lovely riding horse for children. Why did they want to kill it?

I'm not a bitch. I'm THE Bitch. and that's MISS BITCH to you

I found out recently that many people have been releasing their dogs and cats in the town parks. I was brought up to think that once an animal is yours, you take care of it. Its sad that this happens.

Your sister had no right to ask you to take in another cat. You have what you have and only take care of so many.

I totally sympathize with you. Who has that type of money to pay for a cat? Its a hard decision to make but you can only do so much. I can imagine that is the worst feeling ever to make that decision on what happens to a cat.

Ask yourself: What would Starscream do?
I am 100% with you on that subject being an animal lover and working with animals all my life training and showing and playing. I have done many public awareness presentations in my community during high school about pet abuse and the benefits of adoption. My dog travelled with me for these since her first 3 years of life were very hard.

My dog Sindy was found in a box full of drowned puppies and only survivor, she was set lose near a river next, she was beaten and then her 3rd time through adoption found my family. I know this because the lady who works for animal control gave us her complete life story. She was set to be euthanized the day we adopted her.

I had adopted another dog before her who was full of cancer (found out 2 months later) named Micro Chip since he was found at Microsoft. We were told he was 7 yrs and Golden/English Setter mix which made since with his conformation. 2 months later he stopped eatting so I took him to my vet and found out he was 14 yrs old full bred Golden Retriever and 30 lbs less then he should be. He had a tumor the size of a canaloupe in his stomach and his system was on shut down while the tumor had spread. I made sure he was well loved his last month of life hand feeding him rice/beef mesh and babyfood, lifting his leg so he could pee (he was too weak and would pee on himself, and just making sure he felt loved. I was there when he was euthanized and held him in my arms. It makes me mad to this day that his owner turned him out to die alone.

No matter what the pet is, they are an extension of your family and needed to be treated with respect and love. I job shadowed for 2 years at a vet clinic and 1 year with animal control through high school and the shit I saw makes me sick.

It is nice to know there are more people out there who care for their furry family members :D

It was not just a rant you typed, but awareness to the fact that there are animals out there not being taken care of and kept safe.

Were it not for the distance factor and the fact I can't have pets where I'm living right now, I would offer a home to that cat. As it stands, I can only hope things work out.

My first cat would dispute the 'looking both ways' part. He definitely understood traffic. 'Course the vet figured he was about twelve years old, so he had life experience. And some abandonment in his history. But I won't get into that unless you want to know the story.

Why yes, I do offer commissions
"legislation recommending anyone who abuses animals be spayed and neutered" I'm right there with you on that one!! People who abuse or neglect animals make me sick to my stomach; whenever I read such stories, I alternate between literally shaking with rage and feeling so sad for the poor animal involved, I've cried buckets over stories of animal abuse, even ads for pets that need a loving home can bring tears to my eyes... :( I have no sympathy whatsoever for animal abusers, I utterly *despise* them from the depths of my soul and wish someone could crack their heads open with a baseball bat :X Cruel? Perhaps, but when people hurt, abuse and kill innocent helpless animals, for me they lose all right to cry foul; they *must* be punished and *very* hard at that! >=) As for those kids that threw rocks to the kitty, I echo Eerielri: they need a damn good spanking, cause if they pull shit like that at this age, I shudder to think what they can do as teenagers...And don't forget people: many serial-killers abuse and kill animals in their childhood, so the answer to those "oh-so-bright" people that go, "but it was just an animal!" (grrrr!!! :X), is, "if we don't get those bastards now, maybe YOU will be next..."

damn people, if you cant take care of the animal than dont get it. Ive seen this many times, and what do they do come to me to see If I want to take it. Of course I do, not to mention my own cats. Than I see if someone I know would like a cat and make sure they are qualified to take the kitty.
I let my cats outside but I stay with them, they so there business, eat some grass that I planted, if they want to sun themselves they let me know and they lay onto of me, and I get a tan out of it. My house is completely closed off, gates and everything. I've had dogs come after one of my cats before, my cat being the demon that she is kills the poor dog. After that the gates went up. lol sorry dog lovers.
I've had 2 cats die of cancer, Rutabaga yes the vegetable, he was my first and my bestest friend for 8 years, Lucky ...wasn't so lucky and died of Leukimeia 4 days after we got her.
I live behind a ranch they have horses, goats, sheep, chickens that lay eyes, the real way not with the hormone crap. amoung other animals, they take very good care of them, and I get to ride the horses and take care of all of them when there away. They just had a baby foal, sooo cute and fluffy. :)
Thanks Illmatar I needed this rant!!!
