What a striking bird! He's lovely.
The focus is slightly off - the eye isn't as sharp as it ought to be - it looks like you might have focused on the beak instead of the eye. It's not too bad though - a bit of sharpening in an editing programme should help. I think a broader DOF would have been better for this, so that more of the bird was in focus. The bokeh is pretty nice though.
The colour is nice - that red is so vivid. I like the bird's pose too; it makes the shot much more interesting than if he'd just been sitting in a normal position.
The composition could do with some tinkering - the tip of his wing at the top shouldn't be cut off, and more space on the left side (because that's the way he's looking) would be better. I also think that cropping some space from the right side and bottom would be beneficial.
Not a bad shot, and the subject is awesome. =)

Actually, I just quote it DIRECTLY from my own college I graduated from (what a coincidence), so it's probably accurate.. 8D;;

I alwasy get these mixed up .. this looks more like a Tricolored blackbird... or am I wrong..? I had a feeling it was more "white" for them and more "orange " for the Redwing..?
B/c it seems like he seems a bit blue under the light (near the tail), which is what a Tricolor has.. but frankly, I dn't know. XD:

Don't know how reliable this site is, but it has pics of what I've learned:

Please don't get me wrong though, I just want to make sure my so-called "facts" are accurate.. 8D;;

Regardless of who is right, I lvoe this picture though! I get a lot of the "tackles" they try to do or the screeching, but they have yet to do that in front of me =P

It's white for the tri-colored and yellow for the red-wing, although his are pretty pale. He is definitely a red-wing though. We are in Florida and we don't have Tri-coloreds out here. :)

"Bird pic and fanfiction is serious business." Blah. It's all fun to me, but i lack an ego, and have thick skin.

Lack of ego and thick skin are rare and wonderous qualities. That's why yous my friend and you can't get away. Had MIL and other art teacher buddy over yesterday for our jaunt to Busch Gardens and showed them both your Moriah painting. Both loved it and other art teacher pal went on about your mad skills.

Wow, I like these guys. We have one that sticks around but he's too timid to land close enough for a decent shot even with a 300mm lens. :( This guy's impressive. :aww:

The one we have is lady-less at the moment. All he does is bully other birds off the feeders, but it doesn't take much to flush him back up into the trees again. Coward. :XD:

Heh. Around here it's the doves that do most of the bullying. We also have a mockingbird who doesn't even use the feeder but thinks our yard is all his. You might have some females around though...they look nothing at all like the males.

I know the females are quite plain. I saw only one female. They have the whole cattail patch now. I don't see HER at the feeders though. :shrug:

Doves...I call them Hawk Bait. They're so "tame" they waddle out of your way and eye you weirdly. No wonder the feathers in our yard is usually Mourning Dove feathers. :roll: They sit there on the branches like nothing will pick them off. Heh we have a nest of redtails, so they better watch it... :XD:

Blackbirds are funny. The males sometimes show up in flocks and sometimes alone. The ladies tend to show up in flocks.
Doves are dumb. When everything else flies away they just sit there going "huh?" It must work for them though...they are everywhere!
