Some day when you visit, I will take you to Myakka Park.  We almost always see owls, although I rarely get good shots of them.  We can try offering hugs.  I doubt this will work, but if we're lucky they'll laugh at us for trying, and barred owls laughing is one of the most delightful and hilarious sounds in the universe.

Oh Myakka Park is totally wild.  It's just so chock full of wildlife you almost never miss seeing good things.  We go in the evening, catch the day shift finishing up their business (hawks, eagles, ospreys, wading and water birds of all kinds) and watch the sunset.   Then we catch the night shift coming on duty.  That's when we see the owls best.

Barred owls...and don't bother with YouTube.  There is almost nothing online of them talking in that fashion.  Only a few short clips and when they get going it goes on and on.  I don't understand it.  It's called caterwauling and they only do it when they are together.  This is the best clip I've found but only one of them is doing it.  The other is doing the more typical hooting.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=12ioHW…; It's when they all do that weird yukking it up sound at the same time that it really sounds like laughing.  And then I laugh...and laugh.

Lol.  I have never heard anyone describe it as a laugh!  The birds I do hear laughing are the laughing lookalikes , some black vultures, and sometimes the forbids.

If you look up barred owls laughing you'll get a video on youtube that sort of demonstrates it.  They get going more towards the end...but we've heard them make the laughing noise exclusively for minutes at a time.   It's hilarious!  www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzhSxh…

I've not heard black vultures do anything but grunt.  I *HAVE* however seen them tormenting turtles and alligators early in the morning....apparently to keep themselves entertained until the thermals warm up.

At most, their grunt sounds like a deep haunty laugh.  We've got one Black Vulture that does it really well.

I was just recalling the last time I heard Goober (one of the sanctuary's black vultures) laugh and it was like a combination of hissing and grunting at the same time.  We call it the black  vulture laugh.  We have another one named Vader, who's pretty much imprinted, and he will purr very softly sometimes.

I love vultures.  They are so funny.  We caught a trio of black vultures playing "soccer" with an abandoned ball at Myakka park one time.  They ran after it, pushing it around with their feet, and hopping madly with excitement.  They were so hilarious I forgot to take a single photo.

Myakka park?  Is there a raptor rehab somewhere near there?  One of our bald eagles was named Myakka and I believed he was originally from florida.

There are several rehab centers in the area.  The name Myakka refers to a fairly large river system in our area and the surrounding lands, so it is very possible he's named after it.  We have numerous eagles around here.

Have you ever heard them laugh?  When they are being social and happy they LAUGH to each other and the sound renders me helpless.  I laugh until I wheeze!  We will just sit in a parked car under whenever we can hear them and laugh along until they stop and free us from the spell.

Awesome.

What trouble could an owl cause?  Or are you thinking about the logging issue?

Apparently the barred owl is encroaching on the west coast, and pushing out the spotted owls and other local owls even more.

Ah.  Yeah.  I hadn't heard that, but I'm not surprised.  They aren't as shy.  I can easily see them pushing into territory where other owls are already under pressure.

yeah, the one I saw let me take shots, was only untill my mom got out of the car to take a closer look that it flew off, i've had others watch me from like 3 feet away and 2-3 feet above me without batting a eye.  hehe got some cool pictures of a barn owl and 2 great horned owls during my vacation flying around people.  one of the great horned, and the barn were 3 months old.

Very true;)  Can you be a fangirl of Mexican food?  I think it will be day two of tacos, but I am going to go with bean/beef burritos.  This is my comfort food and my fridge is always loaded with tortillas, cheese, meat and beans.  One day I will attempt to make home made tortilla soup.
